RMS 在 90 年代于 glibc 的手册里就中止函数 abort() 中，留下了上面这个有关堕胎的笑话（支持的人称其为审查式笑话）。4月28日，Raymond Nicholson 认为这个笑话对读者完全无用，删除也不会对 glibc 的使用造成任何影响，因此递交补丁希望从文档中删除它。Zack Weinberg 和 Carlos O'Donell 接受了这个补丁，并将该补丁应用到 glibc 的存储库中。此事引起了 RMS 的反对，4月30日晚他在邮件列表中表示这是个对自己很重要的笑话，删除的理由并不合理。
The point of this joke is even more important now than it was when I first wrote it. Please do not remove it.
GNU is not a purely technical project, so the fact that this is not strictly and grimly technical is not a reason to remove this.
5月1日，Raymond Nicholson、 Zack Weinberg、William Pitcock 等项目维护者纷纷在邮件列表上回复，主要观点是认为用户手册不是个人空间，并不适合放这种笑话。RMS 再次强调其立场，他表示这仅仅是一个笑话，而且很短，删除前也并未经过自己的同意，希望能恢复。
A serious discussion of an unrelated political issue would be a strange digression. The joke is appropriate precisely because it is a joke, and very short.

一直努力以某种程度的共识解决问题的红帽高级软件工程师 Carlos O'Donell 表示，这个笑话放在手册中并不合适，可能会伤害那些与堕胎有关的不愉快经历的人，他提出了一些可能的选择，比如说在另一个论坛上讨论这些问题。RMS 则坚持认为手册不意味着是一个“安全区”，而是为了解决一个问题而生，笑话放在里面并没有影响。
A GNU manual, like a course in history, is not meant to be a "safe space". It is meant to address a subject. It must cover the function "abort", just as a course in Renaissance history must cover witch trials and the inquisition.
However, there is no reason not to include the trigger warning if that is of service to people.
Whether the joke is included has no effect on this issue.
之后，大量的反对邮件也导致 RMS 不惜动用了他的最高裁决权。5 月 4 日，RMS 在邮件列表上表示，他是项目的负责人，他负责手册中发布的内容，也决定着社区遵循的标准。

RMS 的坚持也引起了许多维护者和开发者的不满，他们认为项目采用的是基于共识的社区驱动型开发模式，既然大部分的人认为这个笑话在项目手册中不合适，RMS 则应该尊重这种共识，而不是使用权利。
5月6日，RMS 补充道：保留这个笑话的决定在很早以前就决定了，并发布在所有社区用户都可以看到的地方。目前社区争执的观点，并不能说服他改变决定。5 月 7 日，笑话恢复。
截止到发稿前，glibc 项目的邮件列表上依然有大量关于此事的争论。
